József Pehm took up the family name ‘Mindszenty’ around 1944 because of the love he felt for his home village, Csehimindszent. As a respect for the Cardinal, the village today safeguards the spiritual legacy and the memory of Mindszenty.
His signal was ‘Devictus vinci’ which means ‘Victory by loosing’. The fact that his reburial could take place finally, his past is researched by many historians and that his village cultivates his legacy truly can mean some kind of a victory.
‘Those fate is mournful who can not be there at his mother's grave’- said the Cardinal whose last wish was to bring his own remains home only after the last Russian soldier had left the country. Unfortunately he was not able to come home to bury his mother. It was the Italian ambassador's wife in the 1960s who could bring the Cardinal's wreath to his mother's grave. At the reburial of Mindszenty, the track also did not include this place.
However, the cult of the Cardinal is built consciously by his motherland, Csehimindszent. He can even be found on the painting in the church as well as his mother. After the beatification of Mindszenty, a portrait of him will also be put on the walls. The former family house of him became empty recently so the locals will turn it into a Memory House. There is also a plaque and a statue of the Cardinal in the village, in front of the church.
In 2012 the Mindszenty Memorial Walking Tour was organized for the 15th time. It became a pilgrimage during the years. Hundreds of people walk down the 20 km long Vasvár-Csehimindszent track and celebrate a mass at the end of the journey in order to remember the Cardinal.
