Traditional geographical names

območje: Vasi Hegyhát

These names were often connected with geographical phenomena, historic events or, in the case of meadows, with the owner's name.
The names given this way are not always the same that can be found on maps. Even more, in some cases, the territorial borders within the region are not the same as the locals claim.

The dialect of the Vasi Hegyhát region

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: oral traditions
The vasi Hegyhát region has its own unique dialect. Today, some words are spoken only by the older generation, but they are understood by all. The main goal of the dialect might have been simplification in spelling. The unification of the vowels or softening the consonants was as usual here as some strange, local specific words for some items. People from this region were easily identified by their spelling those days. This also makes the Vasi Hegyhát region unique.

Pilgrimage dedicated to Virgin Mary in Vasvár

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: social practices
In the 18th century, when life restarted in the region after the Ottoman period, a new form of pilgrimage was born. It was typical for the Baroque times that the worship for Virgin Mary became popular. The importance of the Dominicans returning home was unquestionable in this process, just like their devotional statue they brought with themselves from Szombathely.
Mary’s adoration was strengthened also by the rebuilding of Vasvár’s ancient parish church dedicated to Virgin Mary. Pilgrimage was and still is important in Vasvár. On the feast day of Assumption of Mary (15th of August) a procession marches to the Graveyard Chapel, and since 1989 on the day of 8 September (feast of Nativity of Mary) a crowd goes to the Holy Well with candles at the evening.
The Holy Well welcomes its visitors with a beautiful ancient beech forest, a chapel, and crystal clear spring water with a touching legend connected to it.

kategorija: traditional craftmanship
We can find many vine cellars near the settlements of Vasi Hegyhát region. They are called “cellars”, however they are not below the ground. These buildings have been always used for producing and storing wine. The older ones were made of locally common wood (oak) and rye straw.
The oldest cellars of the Vasi Hegyhát region are more than 200 years old.
The timber wall's important specificity is that the main elements of the wall are horizontally laid on each other. In Transdanubia it remained a popular way for peasant or village people to build their own houses.
Thatch is the straw earned from carefully threshed rye bound in sheaves which is ready for covering rooftops.
Hegypásztor Kör declared in their Articles of Association that the main goal is to protect Oszkó Vineyard's built and natural values. In order to achieve this goal they managed to relearn the profession of thatch-making from the old thatching masters and by this they could save this beautiful tradition for the future. They were firstly a good example to the local vine producers, later to the whole village and today they are the creators of many sample programs all across the country.

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: practices concerning nature
The treasures from the past in the Vasi Hegyhát region are not only connected to fruit growing, but to livestock as well. It is interesting, but until some years ago there were only a few indigenous animals, but after that, a significant improvement has started.
The region's most famous places in safeguarding indigenous livestock breeding are: the ‘Varga farm’ at Alsóújlak, the 'spectacle park' in Szemenye which shows ancient animal species, a 'land park' in Rábahídvég and the gidrán-stable in Olaszfa.

Traditional wood-carving

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: traditional craftmanship
Since the end of the 1980's two wood-carvers, Imre Tőke from Nagytilaj, and Lajos Magyar from Pácsony got into the focus of historians. They showed their naive works on many exhibitions in the country and got many awards from the audience and from professionals too. The traditions of wood-carving have deep roots in the Hegyhát. However, the two artists passed away long time ago, the tradition of wood-carving remained strong, and expanded in wood-carving camps.
There were several camps organized by the Foundation for Villages' Culture in the Hegyhát. In the villages they made statues for the local public places, and in Vasvár they made the aforementioned statues in the valleys of the Szentkút. (Holy well)

A region open for Fine Arts

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: performing arts
We have to mention five people who live or used to live in the Vasi Hegyhát region and who have never forgot their bonding for the motherland. One of them never knew the region truly, he never lived in the Vasi Hegyhát region, but after his artistic heritage found home in Vasvár, his statues became true cultural values of the area. The others were simply magnetized by the region.
The favourite artistic theme is often the beautiful landscape and the natural environment of the Vasi Hegyhát, and especially the old vineyards in Oszkó, or the Jeli Arboretum.

Cultural festivals, events

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: social practices
Hegyhát is the place of traditional festivals too. ‘Rétes’ festival, folk-singing, theatrical, “pálinka”, vineyard and ‘kurucz’ festivals are all attractive even on national level and have been active for several years. That is for sure that it does not matter which year a visitor comes to Vasvár in August, he will have to face an army of ‘rétes’ (similar to strudel), or he will be able to taste some real quality wine in May at the Oszkó Vineyard. In October he can time travel into the ‘kurucz’ times in Győrvár, just to mention a few opportunities.

The scientific heritage of Dr. László Bendefy: in the footsteps of prehistoric animals

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: practices concerning nature
During a road construction in the past decade prehistoric bones were found next to the borders of Bérbaltavár. It is a common question that why could these bones stay in a good shape as they were in? Some say it is because of the “Ősrába” (Ancient Rába river) that conserved them, others think that it can be because of some kind of earthquakes and fires. We can assume that it was the river's sand that buried the bones, so they stayed undamaged.
The Museum of Vasvár and the British Museum in London also have some artefacts from Bérbaltavár, one of the settlements of the Vasi Hegyhát region. The person, who made scientific research on it, was from Vasvár and his name was Dr. László Bendefy.

The home of peace – The Legacy of the Peace treaty of Vasvár

območje: Vasi Hegyhát
kategorija: social practices
An ambiguous kind of memory is the heritage of the ‘Shameful Peace Treaty of Vasvár’. The retreating Ottoman army was able to get more favourable conditions than the losing side used to have but in fact it was a contemporary political deal. The exact place of the signature is not known because the so-called “Peace House” is more than a hundred years older than the signature. Those days the whole town was destructed, so it was most likely it took place in the Ottoman grand commander’s tent. However, the town wants to remember the signature by the function of the building. The Peace House is also a place where peace conferences are held. A precious permanent painting exhibition is shown at the Peace House too.
