THEATRE - the great stage of Verona

območje : Verona
kategorija : performing arts
Theatres boasts rich and versatile traditions; there are many places and architectures that turn Verona into a preferential set where artists and writers \"naturally\" stop to give life to their performances. Opera and ballet, classical music concerts, drama, comedy and film festivals ensure lively, year-round theatrical activity in Verona.
Thinking of Verona and its bond with the theatrical arts immediately brings to mind Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and the Arena Opera Festival enjoyed by Italian and international opera lovers every year. Yet theatre in Verona is this and much more. Impressive and lively cultural content is assured by the Roman Theatre, the Philharmonic Theatre, the Ristori Theatre (re-opened in 2011 after lengthy restoration work) or the Camploy Theatre (Contemporary Italian Theatre Festival/ Totola Award). The Winter season sees the Philharmonic Theatre and the Sala Maffeiana host concerts, opera and ballet while the New Theatre is home through its historic Great Theatre and Enjoying Theatre events to the most important companies with a calendar embracing ‘classics’ in Italian (Pirandello, De Filippo …) and international drama.
There are also interesting proposals in Summer. The first evening of the Veronese Theatre Summer was held in June 1948 (Romeo and Juliet, in the version by Salvatore Quasimodo): in the early postwar period, efforts were made to turn the city into a cultural destination of excellence and this event at the Roman Theatre was intended to flank the resumption of the Opera Festival. The Veronese Theatre Summer soon became a landmark with marvellous performances: works by Goldoni and Shakespeare, famous dance companies and major figures in the jazz world. Summer also sees the Courtyard Theatre event held in several sites (Arsenal Courtyard, Cloister of Santa Maria in Organo, Cloister of Sant’Eufemia) equally envisaging an impressive calendar of appointments. Theatre happens everywhere: rural courtyards (Corte Molon), former Austrian forts (Santa Lucia), courtyards in city palaces and squares in the suburbs all host the many local theatre companies – from Barcaccia to Estravagario Teatro and Nuova Compagnia Teatrale – ensuring even more vitality in the artistic panorama of the city and its province.
Verona, in fact, is one of the Italian cities boasting the highest number of amateur theatre companies. This phenomenon is especially impressive not only in terms of the high number of companies involved but also the very high quality levels attained. Similar developments are to be seen in many parts of the province: Legnago, with the Salieri Theatre, Cerea, Bovolone, Isola della Scala, Villafranca (in the scenic setting of the Castle), Valeggio, Sommacampagna (in the gardens of Villa Venier), Cavaion (Torcolo Arena), Zevio and Affi. From June to September, the “Province in Festival/RetEventi Culture Veneto” initiative hosts music, theatre, cinema, dance, historic re-enactments and events for children in many towns. Art and much more: theatre is an important flywheel in creating wealth and employment. Mention need only be made of allied business involving craftsmen and small companies (tailors, carpenters, fitters ...) gravitating around this culture industry.
