WINE - world-wide messenger

območje : Verona
kategorija : practices concerning nature
As the emblem of internationalisation for Veronese agro-foods, wine more than any other product is the peak of a business culture that, today as in the past, sensitively interprets trends on world markets through its \"flagship\" product Amarone, boasting an historical background acting as the flywheel for a system of strong-rooted, innovative and qualitative excellence.
Grapes have been grown hereabouts since the dawn of time. Not only have vineyards helped characterise the distinctive landscape of hills and valleys surrounding Verona but have also become the most important resource in the agro-foods system of the area.
Verona today boasts 12 DOC and 4 DOCG wines, as well as some of the most highly qualified and well-known producers of full-scale “designer wines”. Mention need only be made of one its most famous red wines – Amarone from the Valpolicella area - praised as the “bitter wine” by Catullus in 49 B.C. (Carme 27) or Recioto and its noble forerunner Acinato, which Cassiodorus served during the banquets and feasts of Theodoric.
There are many other truly excellent red and white wines: Veronese wine-making boasts an impressive heritage of ampelography and territorial diversity with a wine-growing vocation; this ensures production of wines based on many native grapes (Garganega, Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella, Trebbiano of Soave ...) offering distinctive features, from full-bodied and imposing wines to lighter and more agreeable wines such as Valpolicella, Bardolino, Lugana or Soave - the later embracing not only table wine but also a sparkling wine made with the Classic or Charmant method.
Production is also flanked by promotion and valorisation of wine culture: Verona is home to Vinitaly (46th edition in 2012), the most important international event dedicated to wine and spirits and the one that more than any other has marked the evolution of the wine-making system, helping to turn wine into one of the captivating and dynamic realities in the primary sector.
