Sung and played – The Singing and Music of the Region

območje : Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija : performing arts

Singing and music play a big role in the Eisenstraße ! In addition to a variety of highly cultural musical events (Chopin Festival in Gaming, “wellenklaenge” in Lunz am See, cultural events at the Reinsberg castle area, “klangraum im herbst” in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Haydn Festival in Wieselburg an der Erlauf ) authentic folk music is very popular in the region.
Many farmer-, senior-, church-, school- and youth- choirs, music schools, family and pub music ensembles, hunting- and mountain horn blowers, traditional dress music ensembles and even three factory music ensembles from the companies Busatis (Purgstall an der Erlauf), Böhler Uddeholm (Böhlerwerk) and the Wieselburg brewery provide people with plenty of opportunities to use and develop their musical talents. The popularity of music playing in one of about 30 bands in the region is demonstrated by the 700 inhabitants in the village of St. Georgen am Reith, who can support two music ensembles!

Folk music plays a special role in the Kulturpark Eisenstraße. In particular, the Mostviertler folk musicians, a network of regional folk musicians and music teachers, are especially motivated. They support evening folk music gatherings that take place throughout the region and for several years have lead the musicians pilgrimage to the Sonntagberg basilica. They also organize the Mostviertler music week in Gaming that enables training on folk-music instruments. Legendary is the harmonica seminar that takes place every year in the Gresten Karlwirt from January to March when everyone can learn how to play the accordion.

Also, “Weisenblasen” (tune blowing) has an important presence. This combines singing with music making, whereby the sung folk songs are played by wind instruments. It can be experienced at an alpine hut or mountain-top mass, and also at the “Echo- und Weisenblasen” (echo and tune blowing) in Lunz am See, taking place at the end of August. A special form of singing, Kranzl (wreath) singing, is known as “Zoanlsingen” (wicker basket singing) in Purgstall an der Erlauf. During an event, choirs and singing groups move from place to place and at every musical stop receive a thank you in their Zoanl (wicker basket).

Effort is not only given to traditional singing and playing in the Eisenstraße. Young, creative ideas and initiatives also find their place. In Randegg, four boys have started “Trikondo – The Eisenstraße Drummers” and entertain their guests with innovative, unusual rhythmic music on “instruments” such as garbage cans or empty barrels. The premiere of the “Symphony of Steel” by Leander Hopf by the Böhlerwerk factory music ensemble is also a sign of the recent creative engagement with the region and its history.
