Three Wiseman on horseback – The Three Kings’ Ride in Scheibbs

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: social practices
The tradition of the Three Kings Ride in Scheibbs goes back to the 3 brothers who started it in 1947: Alois, August and Hans Krenn. Today, in the late afternoon on the 6th of January, it is their sons Alois, Andreas and Klemens Krenn who start the annual ride at 5 pm from the monastery church to the city parish church. Dressed as the three holy kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, they are accompanied by three bearers offering gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, two horn blowers, six individuals leading the horses and a star carrier. One can not forget the ten to twenty children dressed as shepherds with lanterns, mainly members of the Krenn extended family, but other children from Scheibbs are also invited to participate.

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: social practices
Even if the “Baunfeita” (holidays when farmers traditionally work less and go to Church) do not have the same meaning as earlier, there are still some that are still present in people’s life and celebrated solemnly. A prime example is St. Joseph’s day celebrated on March 19th, particularly a special annual festivity on the Panorama high trail in the communities of Randegg, Sonntagberg, Waidhofen an der Ybbs (districts of St. Leonhard am Wald and Windhag) and Ybbsitz.

Eggs with special effect – The Regional Easter Traditions (small selection)

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: social practices
Hea einhagern (to symbolically fence chickens) In this particular custom around Easter, palms (sometimes taller than a man), after being consecrated on Palm Sunday, are walked around the house and yard (as far as the chickens wander) to ask for God’s protection so that “the fox steals no hen”. A “boundary” is drawn between the “kingdom of foxes” and the “kingdom of the hens” (“There goes the fox and there goes the hen”). However, this must happen secretly, without being observed by anyone. If successful, the “Einhagerer” (person who draws the fence) is rewarded with a scrambled egg. Afterwards, the individual pussy willow branches are arranged in the house (especially on the family altar), the barn and fields for protection.

Asking for blessings from above – Catching the Holy Spirit at Pentecost

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: social practices
“Catch the Spirit” refers to the gathering of the faithful in the early hours of Pentecost on a very high hill or mountain, usually with a shrine or a cross, to celebrate worship together. Since the Holy Spirit, according to the Bible, came down from heaven to the faithful, this time people go towards the sky to meet the “blessing from above.”

kategorija: social practices
The “Gassatengehen” (derived from a “parade through the streets”) is a nearly 500 year-old tradition in Waidhofen an der Ybbs. The so-called “Turkish Pipers” go through the city from sunset until the early morning hours and awaken the inhabitants with the cry of “In God’s name, the Turks are here !” If someone is addressed specifically by name, a great honour has been bestowed upon them, which is rewarded by hosting the “Turkish Pipers” and / or a generous donation.

Remarkably, their members (especially from the folk dance groups) contain mostly young people up to 25 years of age. High on the alpine hut... – The Alm Traditions of the Region

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: Umgang mit der Natur

In the area of the Kulturpark Eisenstraße there are numerous alms (high mountain huts with pastures for animals) with a variety of traditions that are still celebrated today. Among the best-known are the many alm festivals and alm hiking days. The focus here is on traditional folk music, good food and drink and “Gemütlichkeit” (a feeling of belonging and comfort). These festivals were often connected with small alm masses to ask and give thanks for the health of the cattle, but have partially developed into events that draw thousands of people. Most of the customs on the alms, however, comprise mainly activities that are less well-known, some of which are not open to the public. Below is a selection:

Klezn, Tragatsch and Groamat – The Language of the Region

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: oral traditions
Mostviertler dialect is very different from the written language and is therefore a strong expression of regionalism and local ties. To give an impression of the dialect, a story from the book “Das Original Mostviertler Mundartbuch von Aan bis Zwutschkerl” or “The original book of mostviertler dialect von Aan (letter A) to Zwutschkerl (letter Z)” by Hubert Bruckner is provided. However, you’ll probably just have to take our word for it — mostviertler dialect is a very different language from the German that is spoken in other parts of Austria !

Magic of blacksmiths – Blacksmithing in the Region

območje: Kulturpark Eisenstraße
kategorija: traditional craftmanship

Blacksmithing as well as metal treatment and processing have a long tradition in the Kulturpark Eisenstraße. Due to the abundance of water and wood, as well as the nearby Erzberg mountain that supplied iron, the region established itself in iron treatment and processing during the Middle Ages. On the one hand, the region served as a food supplier for the relatively barren region around the Erzberg mountain, while on the other, obtained in exchange for food the so-called “provision iron” which was processed into small iron products like pans, shovels, sickles, knives and the like.
