Besides game meat, fish were also an important source of protein in the past. The significance of fishing is evident in local literature, where Bovec cheese is mentioned as a leasing good for fishing on the Soča River, best known for the endemic species, Marble Trout. Locals who live near the river remember that everyone was fishing, first with their bare hands, later on with a fishing fork and hook. To be successful they needed to have a great knowledge about where to find the fish, and those fishing techniques. Fishing was popular for both adults and children, but they have always caught only what they could eat. In the summertime fish was on the menu almost every day.
Today fishing in Slovenia is regulated by law and fisheries management is now in the hands of angling clubs. Fishing on the Soča River is characterized by the river’s natural beauty, Soča trout and fly fishing as the only permitted technique.
