Small aches and pains? – Regional Home Remedies

area : Kulturpark Eisenstraße
category : practices concerning nature
Knowledge of healing remedies apart from classic medicine has always been a part of the Eisenstraße. Whether “Wendter” (natural healers) or tried and true home remedies, in Kulturpark Eisenstraße knowledge of remedies and methods beyond traditional medicine is widespread and is passed from generation to generation, or learned in various courses (e. g. homeopathy for humans and animals).
These courses are organized by the district agricultural chambers, Bildungs- und Heimatwerk (“education and home organization”), adult education centers, the agricultural schools of Gaming, Hohenlehen and Unterleiten and their alumni associations as well as being put on by the “Mosthäusl” conference center.

Below is a small selection of well-known regional home remedies:

Arnica (Arnica montana): Set in alcohol, the solution is used for treatment of wounds, sprains and strains, as well as for rheumatism and gout.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale): Helps for bruises, strains, sprains and similar injuries.

Vinegar: Vinegar poultice (cloths dipped in vinegar and wrapped around the ankles) reduces fever and helps with colds and flu.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum): Submerged in oil and set in a dark place, the solution can be rubbed in to relieve muscle pain, sprains, minor burns, minor wounds, ulcers and the like. Furthermore, it is also tonic and soothing, and is a good remedy for nervous disorders, melancholy, depression, etc. Even a painful sunburn can be treated with St. John’s Wort oil, but be careful: Do not go out in the sun with freshly applied St. John’s Wort oil as this increases the sensitivity of skin !

Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) has a special role in the vernacular “Krenbet’n”: This implies stringing sliced horseradish and tying the string to legs, neck or hands to help guard against fever and other diseases. Packed with flour and water in a towel and placed on the chest, horseradish has properties to reduce fever; mixed with honey it relieves sore throat when applied.

Marigold (Calendula officinalis): Used as an ointment, it is an all-rounder similar to the St. John’s Wort and is used for wounds, bruises, sores, sprains, and eczema.

Topfen (Quark /cheese curd product): In a poultice it acts against colds, flu and fever.

Onion (Allium cepa): Laid on the chest, onion lard relieves a severe cough.
