All the world’s a stage – Theatre Groups in the Region

Currently there are 19 theatre groups throughout the Kulturpark Eisenstraße region. Often, young people from rural youth groups and the catholic youth are members of these community theatre groups. In the communities of Gresten and Gresten–Land there are four such theatre groups (the theatre ensemble Gresten, the parish theatre, the carnival group from Wiesergraben and the tavern cabaret at Karlwirt).

Since 1946, theatre and performing arts have played a large role in Reinsberg. The “Heimatbühne” (“home theatre”) offers pieces from different repertoires, from Nestroy to Felix Mitterer to light comedies and even commissioned works (about Adelheid of Reinsberg, former lady of the castle, for example). In addition to smaller performances with local performers, the regional initiative “Regional theatre Eisenwurzen” started in 1995 through the cooperation of actors from across the region, from places such as Scheibbs, Purgstall an der Erlauf or Gresten. One such initiative was the musical “Ritter Rüdiger” (Knight Rüdiger) in 2012, performed at the Reinsberg castle area together with professionals such as the “Bluatschink” singer Toni Knittel.
Also worth mentioning is the theatre group “Waidhofner Volksbühne”, which has existed for over 60 years, almost as long as the “Waidhofner Schlosshofspiele” (Waidhofen castle plays), Lower Austria’s oldest and most traditional summer stage! The “Schlosshofspiele” take their name from the venue, the courtyard of the Waidhofen Rothschild castle that provides the unique ambience for the performances every year. Under professional direction, about 50 active amateurs and semi-professionals of all ages play different pieces from Nestroy to Kleist to light comedies. The “Volksbühne” pays also for three years of training and skills upgrading for its members, resulting in a very high level of performances. |
